Ray Wylie Hubbard

Gigs R-U Ray Wylie Hubbard
August 25, 2016

Venue: Mississippi Studios

City: Portland, OR

Set length: About an hour and a half

Pre-show banter…
I was really looking forward to this show as Melodi and I are huge fans of the song “Conversation with the Devil” from the Crusades of the Restless Knights album (from 1999), as well as other songs like Snake Farm, Choctaw Bingo, Rock-N-Roll is a Vicious Game, and Mother Blues.

My gear for the night was:

  • Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
  • Flash: None
  • Lenses: Canon’s 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 15mm f/2.8

Venue Review…
This is a great place to check out some live music. They don’t “specialize” in any particular genre as I’ve now seen Mike Watt and the Secondment, The Bronx, and now Ray Wylie Hubbard at this venue. Shellac also played here recently but I missed them – bummer. Anyway, the Mississippi Studios concert hall side fits a good number of people, but only enough to keep the show intimate. As they state in their bio, they offer “incredible acoustics and sight-lines – with all custom, non-parallel walls & state-of-the-art analog perfection in the booth.” I would agree with that statement 100%!

Reviews, comments, and possible putdowns for Ray Wylie Hubbard…
Do you want a fun night of good music, great story-telling, and a couple of laughs? Then go check out Ray Wylie next time he is in your area. He tends to play a lot of gigs in Texas and doesn’t always venture out too far but occasionally he’ll make the trek out to the edges. So, I urge you to get out there and support an icon who never quite broke into the big time, but should receive all the accolades as if he did.
