Pretentious – The Pretenders tribute
Pretentious is a Pretenders tribute band who performs songs from their earlier years. Even though I don’t have a huge place in my music heart for the Pretenders, I do have the respect of the group and would give Pretentious a 5 out of 5 stars. I thought they sounded great, were of the generation who “gets” the band, and did a bang-up job for covering such a hard-working and road-paving group. If you are a Pretenders fan and want to be nostalgic for an evening, go see them. I’m sure it was a lot of fun for the people who dig their music.

2019 update: Since this gig, I’ve come to really like and appreciate the music of The Pretenders. I’ve always had an appreciation for the group and an understanding of their importance in the overall music scene, I’ve just never given them a chance. In the early 80’s I was really only familiar with what I knew from MTV or what I happened to hear on the radio in my dad’s car on the way to swim practice. If you aren’t familiar with Chrissie Hynde, Martin, and the rest, don’t go to their Greatest Hits releases first, you must start at the beginning and go deep with their music to fully appreciate the group. Start with The Pretenders, Pretenders II, and Learning to Crawl and then move up the ladder from that point.
