I can’t remember how I found out about this gig, but somehow I ended up there and seeing my friend John Castro after many years.
Date: 12/29/2005
Venue: A small bar in the Silverlake area (I think)
City: Silverlake, CA
Set length: 1hr
Morricone Youth is a very interesting band that, only plays the music that was written for Television and Film. I would love a redo of this evening with some better equipment but the images are what they are. This group is one of my favorites out there as they are not driven by stardom or fame… They create music that would accompany visuals on a screen for the love of the art. I would LOVE to see them tackle Kubrick’s The Shining! Please check out their website and perhaps purchase an album or two. If you like what Fantomas did on their covers album you will love everything Morricone Youth does.
On a photography note… It was hard for me to photograph them this evening just straight on as they deserve a drag of the shutter or a look that doesn’t match other band photography. The layout of the venue was not really made for live music so I didn’t want to be “that” guy moving around and distracting from what the band was doing. I took a few shots here and there but was really more interested in hearing the band. I was using a Canon 20D at the time that had a “peanut flash,” which I used a few times but hated the results. I decided I would drag the shutter in the attempt to capture something interesting, but at the end of the day, I’d love to get another shot at photographing this evening.
