Venue Review…
Same as always but I discovered something tonight. Whoever is in charge of the lighting has no idea what they are doing. Sure, you can buy somewhat expensive equipment, wire them so that you aren’t blowing fuses, and mount the equipment, but there was no thought about distance, color theory, saturation, texture, floods, washes, backlights, gobos, etc. when they installed this system. Not only that, but it looks like these lights have’t been touched in months as some are covered in dust and spider webs. This means that if there was any shifting, then to hell with it. If you look at some of the photos, you will see that one side of the stage is brightly lit while the opposite is in complete darkness – and it had nothing to do with the moment or feel of the song. I just don’t get why someone would spend that kind of money and then not use them correctly or even maintain the equipment. I don’t think there was a thought at all other than hiring someone who could turn them on and off. Paladino’s, if you are reading this then please know that there is an art to lighting the stage and one must know the fundamentals of color theory, at the very least. Red backlights, yellow side fills, and white front spots are the basics here. Once you know the rules then you can break them but please don’t just say “turn on the lights and flood the band – the patrons won’t care as long as they can see them. And throw a bunch of those gels on there – we paid for them so use them all at once.” Uhg, talk about giving your clients a bad experience. Please start with lowering the over-saturation of the reds/pinks you currently have and work up from there – same with the blues. ‘nough said!
Reviews, comments, and possible putdowns for I Dream of Apocalypse…
I am writing this post WAAAY after the gig happened so my memory is not serving me well (we are talking years after). I remember this band being technically proficient but definitely not my style of music. I do like metal but the vocal style and the conspiracy-of-everything rant is what kills it for me. Hey, some people prefer the Six Feet Under vocal stylings over the Iron Maiden way – it is just the way music grabs us, right? In this case, the music didn’t grab me. Don’t take my word for it, go check them out for yourself. Cheers!
