Venue: Twilight Cafe & Bar

City: Portland, OR

Set length: About 40 minutes

Pre-show banter…
Kimm texted and said “hey man, the boys and I are coming up to play Portland – wanna come out?” Hell yeah, I’m there! What did I listen to on the way to the gig? The Rezillos.

My gear for the night was:

  • Camera: Canon 5D Mark IV
  • Flash: None
  • Lenses: Canon’s 24mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, and 85mm f/1.2

Venue Review…

This was my first time at the Twilight Cafe & Bar. My first impression? This place is a shit-hole… AND I LOVE IT! Well, it’s not really a shit-hole, CBGB’s was a real shit-hole and I loved that place just the same. Although I’m not much of a drinker these days, I still love a down and dirty Rock-n-Roll flavored bar and The Twilight fits that bill very well. Hell, they even have a rather large tile mosaic of Lemmy hanging behind the bar (see photo below) so you know they are going to attract model citizens.

Perhaps it was the 4-band bill that was playing tonight but I didn’t see a single pop-punk shirt or imagery on any of the patrons, which was kinda cool (and rare) to see. Tonight’s crowd was flying the flags of such bands as The Clash, Discharge, The Cramps, GBH, etc. The shoes of choice? Low-top Vans skaters and Converse, for the most part.

Also, on top of a great vibe, they even have a Bram Stoker’s pinball, which is my all-time favorite pinball made to date. There are only a couple of these in the PDX area, that I know of.

Their stage/music area is a great place to see live music. The sound is decent and the lighting was not too bad. I did speak with a girl at the bar for a few minutes who commented that she hates photographing here because all the imagery turns out red, which is typical for most small bar stages. The lights tend to be on full power so the saturation you get in-camera to make a good exposure is just begging to be converted to black and white. Tonight though, was not too bad. Sure there could have been some more light on the drummers and they could have used the back-lighting for fill rather than a back-of-the-head spot, but overall I thought the lighting was good enough to work with – this is a lot more than I can say for some venues with much bigger names in Portland.

Lastly, you know who would be a great band to see on this stage? The Bronx – now that would be a FUN show!

Anyway, go give some support to this really cool bar and don’t forget to tip yer bartenders, ya cheap bastards!

Reviews, comments, and possible putdowns for Bomb Squad…

I missed most of this band’s set because I was outside catching up with Kimm, whom I hadn’t seen since last year when they came to town with Fear. But, what I did catch I really liked. Apparently, they have been playing in the PDX music scene for over 30 years! They are a tight band that have a bit of a metal sound with heavy punk roots. I get a slight vibe of Gang Green – sans all the songs about beer. Go check them out at the link below and go support if you like their music!
