Reviews, Comments & Other Putdowns for this event (by Ray)

Joined by Melodi and April, we set off to go see Cradle of Filth at The Grove in Anaheim. I didn’t have my big camera for this event as I didn’t think I would be able to get it in so I brought my Canon G9, which I hid in Melodi’s purse. The shots are a little grainy but you’ll get the idea.

  • Venue Review: The Grove
Nice place… Almost too nice for this type of show. The sound is good, the layout works well and it’s big enough to house a decent amount of people. The staff is always very helpful and polite. Again, nice place…

  • Septic Flesh:
I didn’t know anything about this band until tonight but they became my top pick of the evening. The lighting was very dark, the guitars were tuned low and the vocals were as guttural as could be. The stage was of limited size for them as the equipment for Cradle and Satyricon were taking up the majority of the stage already. I always feel like a band plays better with less space and lights as they tend to form a tighter unit on stage. These guys just put their heads down and churned out a great 40 minute set. Turns out this band is from Athens, Greece and they have been around since 1990. I immdiately came home from this show and purchased all I could online! Each of their releases are different in nature so make sure to inspect everything they put out as you will not be bored with the same sound over and over. If you are in southern CA and want to catch them, they are playing the House of Blues on January 16, 2010 with Behemoth and Shining. See you there…

  • Satyricon:
This was my first time seeing this band and they were received very well. The majority of the crowd knew when to chime in on certain songs and the band appeared to have a good time. Satyricon is a band that was formed in 1990 in Norway and released their first demo in 1992. I believe their name comes from a book whose content was written during the Middle Ages, which is a period of about 10 centuries, but I once again digress… These guys generally get classified under Black Metal but dabble in other forms of metal as well. Go check ‘em out…

  • Cradle Of Filth:
This was the third or fourth time seeing this band. You either like ‘em or you don’t – there is no in-between with them. The crowd was definitely rabid for the older material and the band gave them waht they wanted, for the most part. I found it humorous when Dani said something to the likes of “now that we have the popular songs out of the way…” right after they performed Nymphetamyne and ripped into a barrage of old material. This is a band that needs no introduction BUT if you are looking to try them on for size, I would say to go for the Cruelty And The Beast album first. Some of you are probably saying to go older than that one but anyone who is into this type of music has already searched this band out. The Cruelty release gives metal fans an in-between sound that merges the old and new, in my opinion. Nuff said…
